VettaiAs far as the Tamil movie industry is concerned, there is every chance for this Pongal season to be dominated by 'Nanban', came in Shankar - Vijay combination with a good response. But, you can't pull back another big release 'Vettai', directed by hit maker Lingusamy ('Paiyya', 'Run',' Sandaikkozhi' fame), placing Arya and Madhavan in lead roles. Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul are the heroines. The movie is produced by Ronnie Screwvala for UTV Pictures and Thirupathi Brothers, where the director and his brothers are partners. After the success of 'Paiyya', Yuvan Shankar Raja once again joins Lingusamy. The presence of director's usual companion, editor Anthony is there, but cineamtographer Nirav Shah ('Pokkiri', 'Deiva Thirumagal' fame) works with Lingusamy for the first time.Malayalees Sreejith Ravi and Kalasala Babu are there in the actors list of 'Vettai'.

This is the story of two siblings, Thirumoorthy (Madhavan) and Gurumoorthy (Arya) with contrasting characters. Guru is bold and aggressive, but the elder one Thiru is innocent and coward. When grown up, Thiru got job in the police force and posted in Thoothukkudi district. The area is ruled by an underworld gang leader Annachi (Ashuthosh Rana). Thiru's mariage with Vasanthi (Sameera Reddy) occurs, her sister (Amala Paul) touches Guru's heart. At one stage, Thiru is forced to act against Annachi. How the fearful police officer tackles the situation, is the highlight of 'Vettai'.

The story of the movie is not extra ordinary and rather,it is a predictable one. The hero gets in trouble, while his brother comes for the help, is an area that are familiar to us Vettaithrough many movies before. The villain's revenge and the associated incidents are not new, same is the case of the romantic affairs. The director had tried to present the story without any boring feel, there are no twists incorporated. The sudden change in the elder brother's character and his actions felt cinematic. It is good to see, no extra comedians are placed to create laughs. The arrival of the NRI to marry the girl, is a cliche. The logic in the train sequence can be questioned.

The attraction of the movie is the performance by Arya, supported by Madhavan bearing a good screen presence. In the combination dance scene between the two, the fatty Madhavan is struggling to do the dance steps. Sameera Reddy, girl with least emotions on her face, did well in the house wife character. Amala Paul gets a good role, with three songs. From the body language, it felt like, she is is lacking the maturity to handle the glamor role (it is evident in song visuals).

Cinematographer Nirav Shah gave some colorful visuals. Action sequences are neatly handled by Silva ('Venghai', 'Vettaikkaran', 'Magaatha' fame), the visibility of carpets in few shots should have been avoided. 'Pappa Pappapappa...' is a hit peppy number by Yuvan, choreography by Raju Sundaram should have been better in it. Bg score of the movie goes with the visuals.

Vettai is a cliche commercial entertainer filled with songs, fights, romance etc; if you are too adamant to watch even after knowing this, go on...
