The new Hollywood release in 3d, 'Underworld Awakening' is considered to be the forth sequel of the 'Underworld' series of movies. The fact is that I have not watched any of the previous versions of the particular movie. Hence this movie is a fresh one for me, seeing the posters of the lead lady with gun, I thought that it discusses the story of some underworld gangs or the fights between the mafia groups.
From the words of the Selene, the protagonist (Kate Beckinsale), in the beginning, we are able to understand the theme of this movie, it is not concentrated on the street fight between the mafia and police, rather it shows something big. Here the fight happens between the vampires and the werewolves (lycans). Both these species are able to take the human form and they get mixed with the human population. Selene escapes from the captivity, where she has been kept in a frozen state, for years. A scientist, who has been experimenting on the vampires, has taken steps to keep away both Selen and her daughter from seeing each other. Selene is running away from the dominant humans, who are in the last stage of destroying the vampires and lycans. Now, she is on a mission, to save her daughter from the research center, with the help of a detective.
The main attraction of 'Underworld Awakening' is the inclusion of some electrifying action sequences. The visual effects and computer graphics used in the movie are top class, the chase through the roads and the climax scenes proves it. The morphing techniques are used in the best way, humans changing to wolf and vampires are some examples. The story of the movie might felt unbelievable. It is planned according to the necessity of a fantasy subject like this. You will even witness the vampire saving a person from death, by piercing her hand through the chest to reach his heart. The flavor of movies like 'X Men', 'Twilight' series etc comes in few occasions.
The 3d effect given for the visuals are attractive (Usually we complaint about the lack of brightness of visuals, while watching the movie wearing 3d glasses, this time it was not like that, watching the movie in a theater at my capital city, that installed the 3d facility recently, was a good experience; a couple of trailers of the new 3d releases, shown before the movie, was also interesting). Though the story happens in a big city, the backdrop set designs will give the feel that it happens in some other world, the art and the CG departments, has got much to do on that area.
The cinematography and editing of the movie are good, bg score goes with the mood. Kate Beckinsale gave an aggressive performance in the lead role, she did well in the action scenes too. The detective role should have been given to a more matured artist.
Underworld Awakening is a fast paced fantasy subject, with some good visual effects and high voltage action sequences. A regular follower of such movies, can try this one also.
