Last year, in an interview, we heard writer - director Renjith telling that, "Mohanlal is unreachable for me these days, hence no projects might happen with the ace actor in the near past". Lal's close companion Antony Perumbavoor, who looks after the business deals of Ashirwad Cinemas, replied that "'Pranjiyettan & the Saint' might be a successful movie, but personally I don't feel that it is good enough to gain that position !"
It all became history with in few months; We read, Renjith is directing a Mohanlal movie titled 'Spirit', produced by Ashirwad Cinemas. Prakashraj will be doing a notable role in it. Later, due to date problems and financial issues (as heard), Prakash has walked out of the project and Shankar Ramakrishnan, an associate director to Renjith in the last five years and the director of 'Island Express' in 'Kerala Cafe', has replaced him.
Raghunandan (Mohanlal) felt bored at the nature of job he was doing in abroad so far, now quits and is engaged in writing a novel named Spirit. He is the producer of a notable tv show also. His ex-wife Meera (Kaniha) and her husband Alexy (Shankar Ramakrishnan) are his good friends. Raghu is an alcohol addict, who starts his day by drinking. He has got a good collection of costliest liquor bottles in his house. An unexpected incident has forced him to change the habit, whether he is successful in it or not, tells the story in the remaining parts.
The director had tried to tell a bold subject here. The issue of alcoholism is a relevant one in the current scenario of the state. Some of the dialogues used in the movie are sharp and gets good claps from the audience. Each and every actors in the movie performed well according to the director's wish. It is relevant from the characters of Sidharth Bharathan, Suraaj Venjarammood, Tini Tom, Lena, Kalpana etc. Nandu gave a natural show, his notable one in the last 20years. As a new comer, Shankar Ramakrishnan caught attention.
The attraction of 'Spirit' is none other than Mohanlal. He did the role in a excellent way, even gave the realistic feel that he might have done the role, consuming alcohol in majority of the scenes. Kaniha gave a good support (Vimmy Mariam dubbed well for her). Venu's cinematography is good. Shahbaz Aman gave some light songs, 'Ee Chillayil Ninnum...' in Yesudas' voice performed by Mohanlal is good to watch. Bg score is good for the mood.
The channel visuals is an overdose and creates a lag, it has got a docu - fiction feel some times. The disease factor discussed here is dramatic, felt like a cliche. The visuals in the second song is not created in an attractive manner, it is an unnecessary one. The behavior of the drug addict inside the family is usual, should have been done in a more innovative manner. Thilakan's role needs more stability. In the second half, some where the track is deviated, story changes from one path to another.
Any way, we don't need to raise more issues, as the intention in the theme is positive and it is done by master craftsman Renjith, who has gained the license to create anything beyond expectations. It will be good for the maker, even if a single person had decided to stop drinking, after watching this movie !
