After five years, Ajithkumar's 'Billa' is having a sequel. 'Billa', directed by Vishnuvardhan, was the remake of Rajnikanth's movie with the same name that got released in 1980. Now, the actor want to do a second part of the particular movie. When Vishnu got busy with his telugu project with Pawan Kalyan, Chakri Toleti ('Unnaippol Oruvan' fame) wear the director's cap.
Thus cinematographer R.D.Rajasekhar came in place of Nirav Shah and editor Suresh URS replaces Sreekar Prasad accordingly. 'Billa 2' is Ajith's next release after the success of Venkat Prabhu's 'Magaatha'.
Bruna Abdullah, the Brazilian model, who did a couple of hindi movies, and the Kerala girl Parvathy Omanakkuttan, the former Miss India World winner, are the two female leads. Vidyut Jamwal, the young acrobatic actor, who is notable through the hindi movie 'Force' and a couple of telugu movies and bollywood actor cum model Sudhanshu Pandey have done the villain roles. Other malayalees seen in the movie are Manoj K.Jayan, Krishnakumar and Rahman (in a single scene). Yuvan Shankar Raja handles the music section. The shooting of this mega budget multi lingual venture produced by Wide Angle Creations and In Entertainment productions, happened in Goa, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rameswaram and the foreign locales of Georgia.
Though 'Billa 2' looks like a sequel, the main story deals with the growth of the don David Billa. Thus the new movie has to be considered as the prequel of 'Billa', released in 2007. The story starts in the refugee camp at Rameswaram, where David was also a gang member that reached there seeking for shelter. He raised voice against the injustice happened there. He came to Chennai, with his friend (Yog Japee), becomes an assistant to a business man (Ilavarasu). From there, he grew up on his own, until he reached the right hand position of a big gangster (Sudhanshu Pandey). How, he becomes the don, Billa, is shown in the remaining portions.
As the theme demands, the director had given great importance for action oriented sequences in the movie. The first half goes in a good pace, creates the good thrill and it can even be compared to some of the foreign action classics. The dialogues written by Era Murugan for the hero are excellent, some of them regarding the comparison of terrorists and revolutionaries, good and evil men, the criteria to become an enemy for the hero etc gets good claps. The credit for the good screenplay at that area goes to Chakri Toleti, Sarath Mandava and Jaffer Mohammed.
In the second half, all the proceedings goes out of control. The sequences are build up in such a way that the hero wins the battle at any cost, with less injuries, using his guns. The logic in few scenes at that area can be questioned. The last portions of the movie has got an RGV touch. The heroines in the movie has not got anything to do. In short, seeing the second half we feels that the movie has been finished in a short cut method. Had the team behind, concentrated more on the scripting side in the second half, giving importance for some realistic scenes rather than adding the action and gun masala, the output of 'Billa 2' would have been extraordinary.
Ajithkumar has done well in the lead role. He is a treat to watch, especially the dialogue delivery creates attention. Ilavarasu and Manoj K.Jayan and did
well with their experience. The good looking villains Vidyut Jamwal and Sudhanshu Pandey creates attention, the former one has got few action shots to perform. Parvathi Omanakkuttan is hopeless, she might have understood that acting is not that easy like walking through the ramps. Bruna Abdullah has only got glamorous show, appears in a few bikini scenes.
Songs and bg score by Yuvan Shankar Raja creates the good tempo. The melody number 'Idhayam Indha Idhayam...' should have been included, though we know that there is no space to occupy it. The choreography of the party song 'Bounce...' should have been better, the current party mood is matching the situation, but what I felt is the absence of cinematic steps. Cinematographer R.D.Rajasekhar gave some extra ordinary visuals, creating the richness. Editor Suresh URS gave some neat cuts in the creating the fast paced first half. The action sequences done by Rajasekhar (like the one with the police officers) and other foreign technicians are a treat to watch. Director Chakri Toleti had presented the action movie in the way the theme demanded.

Billa 2 is a pakka action entertainer. With an excellent first half, it is a treat for fans of Ajith.
